March 2018 – Over 5 million births in the EU in 2016
According to Eurostat, the 2016 fertility rate has reached 1.6 babies per woman, compared to 1.57 in 2015. A total number of 5,148 million babies were born in the EU.
With a birth rate of 1.92 per woman, France has the highest level of fertility, closely followed by Sweden (1.85) and Ireland (1.81). Spain and Italy appear to have the lowest fertility level with 1.34 children per woman. The Eurostat press release can be found here.
